This is version two of the Biodiesel Handling and Use Guidelines. I want to thank the many users of version one that provided suggestions for improving these guidelines. I’ve updated it and incorporated suggestions and recommendations from many biodiesel users and technical experts in the biodiesel and petroleum diesel world. Version two contains more detail than version one because every time someone called with a question, I made a note to include the answers in version two.
Biodiesel Basics, what is biodiesel, registration and regulation, benefits of biodiesel use, drawback of biodiesel use, biodiesel in non-transportation applications.3.1 Quality Specifications, 3.2 Variation in Biodiesel Properties, 3.3 B100 Energy Content, 3.5 B100 Cetane Number, Using 20% biodiesel blend, 4.1 B20 Cold flow, Blending Biodiesel to Make B20 or Lower Blends, B20 and Emissions, B20 Cleaning Effect, Using Biodiesel under The Energy Policy Act. Sample Biodiesel Material Safety Data Sheet. Average emission impacts of biodiesel fuels in CI engines6. Long-term storage stability. B100 on left. B20 on right. Some fuels contain natural antioxidants, some contain additions, some B100 distillated, some natural.
A Troubleshooting Checklist For Diesel Fuel, Biodiesel and Bioheat Users This guide contains recommendations for maintaining
fuel quality, along with field troubleshooting procedures. The guide is intended for people who work with liquid fuels in general. No matter where you are in the supply chain, there will be times when fuel quality issues develop that require your immediate attention. This guide can help you isolate and resolve those issues in an efficient, cost effective manner.
Sampling Tips: Use clean sampling devices and containers. Always retrieve a minimum of one quart sample of fuel and a backup sample to be kept and retained for your own testing should it be necessary. Fill sample containers to a safe level, normally 80% of capacity, which allows for expansion during transport to laboratories. Use the appropriate device for pulling bottom samples. Storage Tank Maintenance: Fuels need to be protected in order for product quality to be maintained. This can be accomplished by following some basic, however critical, fuel quality strategies.
