This technical bulletin can be applied for volkswagen 1998-2000 New Cabrio, Golf, Jetta, Beetle with Auto Trans and CAN - Bus. Transmission in limp mode with no MIL illumination (it is also possible that the MIL has flashed but did not stay on). The following symptoms accompany the transmission related DTC fault codes listed below: MIL illuminates once, for a short period MIL command “ON” message is stored Vehicle defaults to third gear, or a combination of second and third gear (limp mode). Throttle Position Sensor -G69- Signal Out of Tolerance - Too High. Final Drive Gear (mechanical fault) Final Drive Ratio Incorrect-Implausable Signal. Production New software levels introduced to correct MIL operation to comply with EPA and California ARB (OBD) regulations.
See following table for part number / EPROM levels of TCM’s with corrected software. This improper MIL illumination is caused by a
TCM programming design deficiency and cannot be corrected. If a customer experiences automatic transmission related problems, along with the symptoms listed in this Technical Bulletin: – Perform the designated repair procedures as described in the Repair Manual CD–ROM Automatic Transmission: Automatic Transmission 01M – On Board Diagnostics DO NOT! Replace a TCM for listed condition unless repair procedures (per diagnosis in Repair Manual) require replacement.
