We have developed a new keyboard-based method for configuring and animating hand gestures. Hand configuration and animation is important to many areas such as: (1) sign language education; (2) education and training in professions that require high level of
dexterity (e.g., surgery, dentistry etc.); (3) technical illustration; (4) art education; (5) character animation; There is a need for modeling, configuring and animating hands. Hand representation plays a special role in artistic compositions [1], [2], [3] and in character animation. Research shows that the audience is drawn to the eyes of the animated character first, and second to its hands to better understand its personality and emotional state [4]. The method that we present in this article is not a GUI but a Keyboard User Interface (which we shall refer to as KUI for simplicity). Although keyboard based, this interface allows the user to reach the desired hand configuration and animation without prior knowledge of any 3D software and without selecting and applying transformations (i.e., translations and rotations) to the individual joints. In particular, for the configuration of 3D characters in modeling and animation, custom interfaces are often built to speed up the process of varying configuration. Fortunately it is possible to design a method for keeping the rotations independent of each other. This is based on using incremental Euler angles– a feature that is available in current versions of Maya.
