Attaching a modern 5 speed overdrive transmission to a Ford Cologne V6 engine is a bit difficult. This text deals with two possibilities; either the Ford T9 transmission or the Borg Warner T5 transmission. When using a T9 with a Cologne V6, only the T9 from a Scorpio has an input shaft long enough to reach the crankshaft. However, the Scorpio T9 uses an electronic speed sensor and as such has no connection for a cable speedometer. All XR4Ti T9’s have a cable speedometer connection. However, the XR T9’s have too short of an input shaft. The pilot diameter is also larger on the XR T9. For the XR T9’s the pilot bearing will have to be placed in the ID of the flywheel. No commercial bearing exists to do this so a custom brass bushing needs to be made. Pilot Bushing for T9/T5 Installation While the bolt pattern of the T9 matches the bolt pattern of the Capri 4 speed there are some problems with the Capri bell housing. Only the Scorpio bell is correct but the Scorpio T9 is exceedingly rare in the United States. A Capri 2.6/2.8 bell housing can be used but it will need to be bored and have an enclosed tube installed to clear and seal the T9’s integral shifter rod. The tube must be sealed or oil will leak out and water will leak in. The stock Capri clutch disk can be used. The stock Capri speedometer cable attaches correctly to the T9. The Merkur Scorpio uses an electronic speed sensor for speed indication. The automatic speed sensor can be used when connected to a short speedometer cable. Fabrication of attachment pieces will be necessary.
