Power comes from the Phantom’s advanced, direct injection, 6.75-litre V12 engine, which delivers unstressed, effortless performance. Currently there are no plans for 101EX to be put into production. It is an experimental
car that explores future design directions, a showcase for the innovative design and high-tech architecture that
pervade the quintessential modern Rolls-Royce car. The Volkswagen Golf again provides the donor platform, and overall size is little changed. The roadster remains a two-seater, and the coupe again is fitted with token back benches. The shooting brake, however, should offer genuine four-person seating. Besides fickle fashion, the new TT will battle more serious competition, in the form of the BMW Z4 and the Porsche Cayman. Cosmetic changes include new front and rear bumpers, an exhaust system that terminates in the rear bumper’s lower diffuser, and a modification of the two body-side air intakes (one of which houses an enlarged oil cooler). Springs, anti-roll bars, and shocks are all new, along with a new 8.5 x 18/13 x 18 (front/rear) “Hermera” standard wheel. Volkswagen calls the Concept A “the child of a new era,” but we think a more likely parent has to be the Hyundai HCD-9 Talus Concept shown at January’s Detroit show. Both feature all-wheel drive, suicide rear half-doors, huge wheels, and styling that blurs the line between SUV and sports car (as well as between Volkswagen and Hyundai.) But unlike Hyundai and the countless other coupe-truck creators, Volkswagen will be putting a vehicle similar to the Concept A into production within the next few years.
